The Role:
- Machining a range of exotic metals into precision components for high end motorsport, aerospace, defence and medical applications.
- Reading and interpreting engineering drawings and technical diagrams.
- Use of verification software to ensure CAM programs are pre-machining risk assessed, and fit for purpose.
- Use of advanced CAM programming software for 3 and 5 axis milling machines.
- Set and operate 3 and 5 axis milling machines.
- Maintaining a safe and tidy work environment at all times.
- Providing feedback to team leaders and shop floor staff to highlight any technical issues or potential risks.
- Help drive technology and cutting-edge manufacturing techniques.
Qualifications and Experience
- Time served machinist, preferred but not essential
- City and guilds in mechanical manufacturing engineering or equivalent
- 3 and 5 axis milling experience
- CAD/CAM experience is desirable although training can be provided
- Good communication skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- Flexible approach to workload and business requirements
- Works well in a team environment
- The ability to work under pressure
- Use of Heidenhain and Fanuc controllers

Progressive Technology’s three year apprenticeship scheme provides successful candidates with the training and experience become a highly skilled mechanical engineer.
At Progressive Technology, the first year of our apprenticeship scheme is spent in our purpose-built training academy and college day release with support and tuition provided by the Apprentice Training Manager. You will learn basic machining and hand fitting skills through a series of supervised machining tasks, in which you will manufacture a number of engineering tools.
Our on-site academy is fully equipped with:
- Centre lathes
- Vertical milling machines
- Surface grinders
- Pillar Drills
You will attend Basingstoke College of Technology one day a week. This will provide you with a thorough understanding of the materials, manufacturing equipment and processes that you will be use throughout your career.
Your second and third year will see you placed in a specific part of our business, either machining, quality, composite pattern or additive manufacturing.
By the end of your apprenticeship with Progressive Technology, you will have achieved a Level 2 and 3 NVQ Extended Diploma qualification in Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering, We offer the opportunity to further your education and study for an HNC or HND.
This is a full-time position working 40 hours per week, from 8am until 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.*
Qualifications
Successful candidates are required to have a minimum of GCSE passes at grade 4/C and above in Mathematics and English, plus GCSE passes at grade 4/C or above in at least two additional subjects.

The successful EDM wire machinist applicant will come from an engineering background and ideally come with experience of working within the motor sport/automotive/aerospace industry. You will be working within a very demanding but also rewarding environment.
The Role
