Mechanical Engineer Apprenticeship

Our apprenticeship scheme provides entry level students with the knowledge and training to pursue a career in engineering.

At Progressive Technology, the first year of the apprenticeship is spent in our purpose-built training academy with full support provided by the Apprentice Training Manager. You will learn basic machining and hand fitting skills through a series of supervised machining tasks, in which you will manufacture a number of engineering tools.

You will work on a variety of machines within the academy including:

  •         Centre lathes
  •         Vertical milling machines
  •         Surface grinders
  •         Pillar Drills

In addition, you will attend Basingstoke College of Technology one day a week. This will provide you with a thorough understanding of the materials, manufacturing equipment and processes that you will be using throughout your career.

The second and third year will see you placed in a specific part of the business, being either machining, quality, composite or DMLS.

At the end of your apprenticeship with Progressive Technology, you will achieve a Level 2 and 3 NVQ Extended Diploma in Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering, with the opportunity to further your education and study for an HNC.

This is a full-time position working 40 hours per week, from 8am until 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.

 

Candidates will require a minimum of four GCSE passes at grade 4/C and above, to include the following subjects: Maths, English, Physics, Chemistry, Technologies, Engineering, Graphics or Resistant Materials.

Deburrer

The ideal candidate will have previous experience in a deburring position or transferable skills in a similar, hands on role.

Responsibilities of the role include:

  • Deburr, finish and polish machined components using various hand held powered tools and finishing materials.
  • Ensure components are finished to the standard expected by the customer within given deadlines.
  • Liaise with the area Team Leader and Inspection Department to manage workload and customer requirements.
  • Read and understand technical drawings to ensure components are in line with job requirements.

Various shifts are available, however the candidate should be available to train on a standard day shift throughout the first three months within the role.

Machinist / CAM Programmer

We are seeking a highly skilled CNC Machinists and Programmers to join the team.

The position involves;

  • Manufacturing high end motorsport components from a range of exotic materials.
  • Use Cam programming software to produce programs for both 3 and 5 axis milling machines
  • Use simulation software to verify CAM programs are risk assed and fit for purpose
  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings and technical diagrams
  • Set and operate 3 and 5 axis milling machines
  • Maintaining a safe and tidy work environment at all times
  • Liaising with team leaders and shop floor staff to highlight any technical issues or potential risks
  • Help drive technology and cutting-edge manufacturing techniques

The following skills and experience is required;

  • Time served machinist, preferred but not essential city and guilds in mechanical manufacturing engineering or equivalent
  • 3 and 5 axis milling experience
  • CAD/CAM experience is desirable although training can be provided
  • Good communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Flexible approach to work load and business needs
  • Work well in a team environment
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Use of Heidenhain and Fanuc controllers
